Parallel and Contrapuntal Sounds

Film Noir Research

The colour scheme looks to be monochrome as it has a black and white filter on it. This would make me assume that it would be based in the past. Another piece of evidence that supports that film noir maybe solely based on the past is the vehicle and the building which looks quite old and not very modern. The lighting looks to mainly be low key to potentially capture that theme of darkness and mystery in  this crime themed setting. Shadowing looks to further enforce that idea of mystery. The low-key lighting could suggest that this character is a mystery or is quite evil since he attacks police officers and has his apartment breached by the authority which could suggest that protagonists of this setting tend to be against the law. The colour red looks to be the only highlight colour through out as there is red sirens and blood which could indicate a sign of danger that is within these films. Red can also be used for make-up on femme fatales as an iconic feature that would be mainly seen in these sorts of films as red tends to connote to danger.

Film Language: Lighting

Picture 1
The lighting on the picture looks to be low key as there is shading on her face makes her look a little sinister or mysterious. Her face is vibrant contrasting the dark background that surrounds her. The key light looks to try and make a dramatic effect with the expression on her face with the smoke that is also surrounding her. The smoke that is emitted looks to be lit by the same key light that is shone onto her right side. The Lighting doesn't really show much of the background which could also strongly  suggest that it is of a low-key lighting. It isn't clear but there is a slight hint that there may be some top lighting judging by the light that is shone on her dress.

Picture 2
This looks to have a low-key lighting effect that judging by the shading that is present on her face. There looks to be some top lighting which could show highlight the looks of the character on shot. There could be lighting from the side but that could be emitted from the same top light. The effects given by this lighting makes the actor look more glamorous as it highlights her facial features.

Picture 3
This picture appears to be a high-key lighting as the background is lit greatly so that then it gives it that realistic look of day time. There looks to be top lighting judging by the shading on his eyes. The key light looks to accentuate his expression of aggression as he looks pretty fierce as he seems to be in a serious tone. The lighting could also highlights his clothing as he looks to be wearing some luxury clothes which viewers could assume that he is in a strong position in this stage of the movie. The shading on his makes him looks sinister making him seem pretty evil.

Picture 4
The lighting looks to be low-key as there is a lot of shading on his face. There is a big contrast of light between the lighting of his gun and the dark. The hand gun looks to be lit from a back light. The lighting looks to contrast so that it can highlight his facial features or his expression. The lighting also shows the rain to show that atmosphere of being sinister.

Picture 5
The lighting here looks to be low-key lighting due to the shading that is present on her back and the shadow that is protruding from her. The shading on the wall suggests that there is lighting from the left side. The lighting could suggest that she is a victim who is about to die. This is due to the lighting that is highlight the expression on her face which looks to be in a horror film which mainly rely on low-key lighting which would add mystery to the mystery in different situations.

Picture 6

This photo looks to have a high-key lighting due to the natural lighting that is being lit from the window behind the female giving it a natural source of lighting. There also doesn't seem to be many shadows besides the blinds behind them which further support that this is high-key lighting. This looks to have lighting from the side due to the sunlight that is being emitted from the side. This gives the effect of a romantic setting due to the vibrant atmosphere.

Picture 7
This still looks to have low-key lighting due to the shadows that are present on the floor. The four characters don't look as visible either so this could be another indication that this is more of a low-key lighting. The lighting looks to be from behind due to the shadows facing towards viewer rather than any other direction. This could give the effect of mystery and suspicion as to who they are and what they plan to do.

Picture 8
This looks to feature low-key lighting due to the shading that is present on both face and the shadow that is present There also seems to be lighting shone towards her back as the shadow is present on the wall. This could give the effect of mystery or horror as the expression on her face looks to seem lost with the shading on her face that could depict horror.

Picture 9
This photo looks to feature a high-key lighting due to the lack of shadows. This bright lighting could suggest that we're expected to see what the character feels therefore making it seem that we should care for the character. Since we get some bright lighting on the character, we can see his hands are closed together depicting as to whether he is praying or wishing for luck. This could show that the character relies on luck in a potentially impossible event.

Picture 10
This still looks to be based on a low-key lighting. This could mean that it was put on a dark atmosphere on purpose to try and hide the features of the killer to add suspense and mystery to how he kills his next victim. The lighting that is behind the killer outlines his figure making him vaguely visible. This could give the effect of mystery or horror due to the fact that he is going to kill his next victim in a dark area making him look villainous.

Picture 11
This isn't clear as there are shadows that are present in the scene which makes me think that this is low-key lighting. The characters on scene look intimate which contradicts the common theme that it would go onto mystery. The couple also don't look to have violent intentions and their face are visible which could lead it to high-key lighting. The light looks to be lighting from the left side of the characters. The effects made by this photo make it seem like a peaceful atmosphere.

Film Language: Mise-en-scene

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

This scene involves the antagonist (Winter Soldier) going on hand-to-hand combat against the protagonist (Steve Rogers). The mask on the attacker could show that he has characteristics of an assassin as well as wielding a knife towards him. Also the colour choice of black could also enforce the assassin style to him. The metallic arm doesn't match his right arm which could suggest an element of sci-fi. The costume of the hero shows more civilized which could portray him as innocent or good. Furthermore, his actions are mainly blocking the strike of the enemy which could suggest that he has experience of combat. The setting is based on road due to the fact that there's a car beside the hero and a pathway intersects in the background showing a sort of urban american background. Another note is that the villain that's attacking Steve is mainly using armour which could show a segment of the action genre. The facial expressions on Steve on scene show a look of surprise as he blocks the attack of the enemy.

Sinister: Horror

Judging by the dark atmosphere with the night being the chosen time of day.Viewers can already notice that is is a horror film as they would mainly have dark rooms to intensify the mystery of the scene. Also the wall with information pinned on the wall would also signify the viewers that this character is the supposed hero who tries to track down the killer. Close up of mysterious objects such as the bushes is also present to expect the cliché surprise. The facial expression on the character has a look of suspicion when he observes the area. The position of the protagonist on scene suggests a weak side as he seems feared by the presence of a mysterious force that haunts him.

The Equalizer: Action

The setting is based in a restaurant as there's a mug placed on Denzel's table. There is also a blurred american flag on the background which could then be suggested that this is located in America. The tattoos seen on the workers arms could suggest a criminal background or that he is affiliated with a gang. The close ups of the character opposite Denzel suggests that he uses a tactical approach and thinks carefully as we get to see his thought process before the action occurs. Not only that, but his expression shows his fierce determination to eradicate the conflict that could potentially start by taking advantage. The close up and use of a gun in this scene can suggest that this character has links towards crime as we don't normally link construction workers with crime but rather architecture. The appearance of blood on the floor as it splatters in the fight scene could suggest an element of action which the genre always tends to host in a majority of its films.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Sci-fi

This clip demonstrates the atmosphere of sci-fi as it shows a confused Peter Quill (character name) who has just lifted a mysterious object that doesn't look to belong in earth. There also appears to be a holographic cover that was defending the object giving this film the futuristic and mysterious look to viewers. The guards who look to defend the object doesn't look human with this alienated look of suspicion as they encounter each other. The costumes that the guards are wearing don't look familiar to any known form of authority in earth which could also present a sense of an out of this world story. Also due to his expression and actions, Peter looks confused as though he hasn't known about the place and being threatened by a force of authority. Since the guards are armed with what looks to be powerful weaponry, this could connote that the stone could be weapon of mass destruction as the weapons emphasise the importance of the object. The final elements of the clip present a breakout from the guards showing an element of action in the mix. The position of Peter in the clip presents him as defenceless against the armed forces that go against him. The guards take a more aggressive posture judging by the position of the weapons being pointed at him which supports that idea that the protagonist is regarded as powerful. However near the end, Peter takes out all the guards that put him in a position of power compared to the guards who are weakly thrown away from the element of surprise.

Comparison
Overall horror films tend to have a dark atmosphere with close ups to emphasise the expression of the character to show the position they're in more than the other film genres. The sci-fi genre shares similar aspects between each other as they would show close ups when necessary such as showing a mysterious object like an item which looks alienated. Action doesn't involve as many close ups but would normally have medium shots to show the fight scene or struggles of the protagonist as this is the main reason that people would watch an action movie.

Film Language: Poster Analysis

Blade Runner

I think the film is about a man who has finally found his rival in combat and must defeat him to keep his title. I'm saying this because judging by the tagline, he would want to stay as the superior character There's also a flying vehicle which presents an element of sci-fi. The genre can be action as Harrison Ford's character is seen holding up a weapon. Also the light is mainly shone around the protagonist's face which could show that Harrison would be the selling point for this trailer. The target audience could mainly be those who have an interest in the action genre. As previously mentioned the vehicle presents a sci-fi element so it would most likely attract some sci-fi fans.

Scary Movie 2

The film looks to be about the misfortune of people in a horror film but parodied for entertainment. The storyline might be based around the characters on the poster as they may die in a comedic manor. The characters don't really look like they're in danger or would have any signature weapon or blood which would've been conventions tailored to a thriller film. However it looks like there's just the cast looking towards the audience like watching a movie judging by the projector that's behind them. The genre is comedy but with an element of thriller although it isn't the typical thriller film. This could be targeted towards teenagers and people who like comedies due to it's main genre.

Uzak

Uzak looks to be about someone's journey of surviving judging by the slightly gloomy atmosphere and that there's a single person standing out on his own. The genre could be drama as it could be mainly focused on his life. It could be tailored towards an older audience as it may have some serious themes in his life while surviving on his own.

I'm Not Scared

This looks to be a thriller judging by the fact it's on the tagline and the title which has a sense of fear with it. The story could be based around a kid who gets bullied and there's a challenge that none have dared to conquered until he accepts this scary challenge to boost his reputation (this is assumed). This potential narrative has the requirements of a young child. Also since he is looking down, he may be facing the challenge moments before attempting it. This sort of film could be mainly based for a thriller audience.

Sin City
This looks to mainly be film noir due to its black and white colour scheme with the infamous text on read which looks similar to a 1980s film. This also givers the film this old sense of feeling. The guns that are wielded by the cast on the poster also insight on some action in this film. The film could be targeted for an older audience due to its setting but it may also bring in some younger audience for it's action sequences

This looks to have action and adventure with the theme of pirates in this movie. Judging by the title, it would seem like the protagonist pirate is searching for a chest which may include treasure which is mainly associated with pirates. The genre looks to be adventure from the title "Dead Man's Chest" and have some action judging by the gun that Jonny Depp's character is holding up. Also there appear to be ships at sea so there could be naval combat expected in the movie. This is mainly aimed to ayounger audience such as children as they would more likely have an interest in pirates compared to an older audience.

This looks to be a movie about a man who wants to go out with the girl that he may think is his "one". The overall weather looks peaceful so it could also signify this being less likely to have violence. This looks to have an element of comedy judging by the comment made above but it looks to mainly be about romance. There also appear to be a crowd behind them which could signify their importance in the movie. This film looks to be based at a family friendly rating but the last comment "so sexy" questions the family friendly setting that it maybe.

This looks to be about a young woman who is worth a lot maybe because she could be an important character in this movie that she must discover. This film looks to have a factor of action because of the sports bra which is usually signified with active work or that she may be on the run because she is a high value target. This film looks to have the action genre because Clint Eastwood is mainly known for his action films as well as westerns. This film looks like it is targeting fans of action due to the colour scheme having this dark and gritty look.
